Naming Procedures
Students, faculty, staff, alumni, or emeriti may submit requests to name or un-name campus spaces. The process is outlined in the Naming of Places and Landmarks on Campus policy.
Naming
Students, faculty, staff, alumni, or emeriti can submit a request to name or un-name a campus space to their college Dean or Vice President. Naming requests should include:
- name(s) of submitter(s)
- name of the individual to be honored
- proposed campus space
- why this individual should be honored with a named space on our campus
- how this individual reflects the current university mission, vision, values, and/or diversity and inclusion goals
Un-naming
Un-naming requests should include:
- name(s) of submitter(s)
- current named space
- why this individual should no longer be honored with a named space on our campus
- how this individual does not reflect the current university mission, vision, values, and/or diversity and inclusion goals
Dean/Vice President Next Steps
The Dean/Vice President will forward these requests to the following individuals for background research:
- archives@mnsu.edu
- christopher.corley@mnsu.edu
- jennifer.besel@mnsu.edu
Additionally, the Dean/Vice President will request University Advancement review the proposal to determine if there is a fundraising opportunity that coincides with this naming opportunity.
Review Committee Next Steps
Upon completion of the research, the University Archivist will convene the ad hoc Campus Named Spaces Review Committee (CNSREC).
The CNSREC will review the research material and make a recommendation to the President.
- The committee will utilize the recommended principles, research questions, and processes outlined in the November 13, 2020 Buildings and Landmarks Review: Findings and Recommendations report.
- They will also consider how the proposal is in alignment with criteria outlined by the Minnesota State Board Procedure 8.1 Naming Buildings, Sites, and Common Areas.
Final Steps
The President will review the recommendation with Cabinet. If supportive, the President presents the proposal through the Meet and Confer process and writes a recommendation letter for the Chancellor in compliance with system procedures.
- There will be an annual deadline for submissions of newly named places or landmarks.
- The Campus Named Spaces Review Committee (CNSREC) membership will be appointed by the President of Minnesota State University, Mankato.
